Quizlet vs Wispy for speaking English
Quizlet is a fast way to study a set of words: flashcards, quizzes, matching games. Wispy is for after you know the words: saying them yourself, in your own sentences, in a conversation.
If you can pick the right definition out of four but cannot find the word when you talk, that is the gap between the two.
Written by the Wispy team. Details about other apps were checked in October 2026 and can change.
What each one trains
Researchers distinguish passive vocabulary, the words you understand, from active vocabulary, the words you use, and the two grow at different rates (Laufer, 1998). Wispy works on the third skill.
Point by point
| Quizlet | Wispy | |
|---|---|---|
| What you practise | Matching terms with definitions or translations: flashcards, multiple choice, typed answers, games. | Saying and writing English words you already recognise, in conversations and short tasks. |

| Speaking out loud | Not part of studying a set. | Voice conversations with an AI partner. You can also answer in chat. |
| Feedback | Right or wrong on each answer. | After each conversation: which of your words you used and which you avoided, quoted moments, habits, and phrases you repeated three or more times, with natural replacements. No praise. |

Where Quizlet is the better choice
- You are preparing for a test with a fixed list of terms.
- Your teacher or class already shares sets there.
- You study several subjects in one place.
- You want something free that works in a browser and on Android.
Where Wispy fits
- You recognise far more English words than you use, and you speak in short, safe phrases.
- You have a conversation coming up, like a stand-up, a job interview or an apartment viewing, and want to rehearse it first.
- You want to practise out loud with nobody else listening, by voice or in chat.
- You want to see which words you already say yourself, not only which ones you have reviewed.
Who Wispy is not for
- You are starting English from the beginning. Wispy works with the English you already have, roughly from B1.
- You want conversations for free. The free version includes one trial conversation; after that, conversations are part of the subscription.
- You want one app for many languages or subjects. Wispy is English only.
Using both
A set you studied in Quizlet leaves you with words you recognise. Using them is another matter: in a conversation nobody offers you four options. Wispy is built for that moment.
Questions
Will Quizlet help me speak English?
It helps you recognise and remember words, and speaking needs that. It does not make you produce them: in a conversation you have to bring a word up yourself, in a second or two, inside your own sentence. That part needs speaking or writing practice.
Is choosing the right answer the same as knowing a word?
It shows that you recognise the word. Using it is a different skill. That is why in Wispy, picking an answer from a list never counts as saying a word: only a sentence you said or wrote yourself does.
What should I do with vocabulary if I already know a lot of words?
If you already recognise most of the words you meet, each new card adds less. Spend that time using them: say them in conversations, write your own sentences, and notice which words you keep avoiding.
